Revolution in Staff Development

Julie Martin, Medici Programme Coordinator, Aston University

Aston University Medici Fellow Julia Brown has been appointed as Business Development Manager for Aston University's School of Life and Health Sciences on the strength of her work into its Continuing Professional Development programme.

Julia was a Medici fellow in the School of Life & Health Sciences (LHS) at Aston University from September 2004 to September 2005. As part of her Fellowship, Julia performed an investigation into possible CPD courses that the School could deliver and subsequently drew up a business plan for this proposition. On completion of her Fellowship Julia was appointed as Business Development Manager for LHS, with responsibility for establishing and developing the CPD commercial activity, in accordance with the business plan. Since this time a number of highly successful CPD activities/initiatives have taken place and generated many further opportunities and of course generated income for the School. These include a contract with Birmingham City Council to train Asian caterers in the new food safety management system supported by a grant from the Food Standards Agency, a new 6 day Audiology course and the Auditory Verbal Therapy Conference both accredited by the British Academy of Audiology, a successful grant for the Flexible Learning Development Centre at Aston and a series of accredited conferences. Aston has also won the bid for the British Psychological Society, Division of Health 2009 Conference. For further details of any of the above contact Dr Julia Y Brown, LHS Business Development Manager on 0121 204 3908 or j.y.brown@aston.ac.uk or visit the web site http://www.aston.ac.uk/lhs/profdev/
