Mission and Aims

Midlands Medici, an innovative training and personal development programme, aims to improve the awareness of and support for commercial development of research within Midlands Universities. It has been designed with the aim of fostering a climate of entrepreneurship, particularly in relation to research that has commercial applications in bio-medicine, technology and engineering; and to deliver a cultural change that will boost commercial awareness and to embed that awareness within the Universities.

The programme operates across the East and West Midlands. Medici trains academics and researchers in enterprise and entrepreneurship, so that they understand the process of exploiting science and technology in a commercial context. By training researchers, this knowledge is embedded in the academic departments. The main objectives are to:

  • embed innovation activities acrossthe partner universities;
  • raise the commercial awareness of academic and post-doctoral staff;
  • create a 'college' of Medici Fellows across the HEIs.

Output targets of the programme include additional consultancy income, patent applications, technology licences, spin-out companies, industrial research and collaborative research.

Process targets include delivery of workshops and seminars, attitude change amongst academic and scientific staff, career path follow-up and collaboration across the partnership. To date, Medici has exceeded all of these objectives and continues to strive for greater commercialisation of academic research.
